Traveling With Children: What do I need?

When it comes time to pack up and hit the road or the skies or the rails with children, what are the necessities? What are the items that will make traveling in a car or on an airplane or on a train a safer, more comfortable and all around better trip?

Recently Big Sister E and I flew from chilly Wisconsin down to warm Arizona for a mini-vacation with my mom. Even though we missed Little Sister B and Daddy terribly, it was fun to have this adventure together, just the two of us. We saw the sights, we soaked up a little sun and Big Sister E even got to personally bring a bowl of this:
