Disclosure: I received Disney Channel "Teen Beach Movie" products in exchange for a post about the film. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Similar to reaching for traditional comfort food during cold, winter months, grabbing a joyful, musical movie during the summer somehow just makes sense. There's just something about a breezy, beachy comedy that fits with the relaxed feeling of Family Movie Night when the temperatures have risen, right?
And while we have all grown up with Grease and West Side Story, there is a new Disney Channel Movie coming out this summer that is sure to be a hit for the whole family: Teen Beach Movie.
Premiering Friday night, July 19 at 8pm ET/PT on Disney Channel, Teen Beach Movie (rated TV-G) is geared toward kids and tweens (and their families). This surf-rock musical comedy is sure to get all ages up dancing and singing, plus it comes with a feel-good message about the importance of believing in yourself and following your true destiny.
The film is a fun, modern take on classic beach party movies, and the engaging story, music, dancing and retro fashion makes this the perfect movie for the whole family to watch together.
Teen Beach Movie follows the tale of teen surfing sweethearts, Brady and McKenzie, when Brady saves his girlfriend from a bad wave during their last surf of summer and the couple gets magically transported to the 1960s world of "Wet Side Story," Brady's favorite beach movie musical. There, it's surfers versus bikers for control of the beach hangout…and everyone spontaneously breaks into song and dance.
While Brady and McKenzie try to return to present day, they realize that their lives may be changed forever when they inadvertently alter the movie's romantic storyline when handsome surfer Tanner falls for McKenzie and biker girl Lela starts swooning for Brady (resulting in a showdown between surfers and bikers over control of a popular beachside hangout spot).
Will one last wave change their future forever?
This fun movie features a soundtrack with 12 songs influenced by surf rock, Motown R&B, rockabilly and pop, as well as stars:
- Ross Lynch, star of Disney Channel's Austin & Ally and Hollywood Records' R5
- Maia Mitchell, star of ABC Family's The Fosters and guest star on Disney Channel's Jessie
- Grace Phipps, star of ABC Family's The Nine Lives of Chloe King and the CW's Vampire Diaries
- Garrett Clayton, guest star of Disney Channel's Shake It Up and NBC's Days of our Lives
In the meantime, they have been thrilled to dig into our Teen Beach Movie party pack and get into the beachy spirit!
Whether we're pretending to be starring in the movie ourselves...
...daydreaming of packing our bags and heading for a day of fun at the beach while we rock our tattoos...
...or having a good time trying out the various recipes, themed games, activities and music videos in the Teen Beach Movie online party kit...
...we've been having a lot of fun getting Teen Beach Movie ready.
We're looking forward to seeing the singing, dancing and positive themes (e.g. follow your dreams, be yourself, and there's nothing wrong with being different) of this new movie soon! What better combination in Teen Beach Movie than great storytelling and entertainment with a meaningful plot and the promotion of self-expression, friendship and youth empowerment?
Plus, it never hurts when the stars of the movie give us a personal shout out! Thanks so much, Ross and Maia!

My son is still a little young for this but looks like fun. I like the origami necklace activity.
This sounds like a great movie for my grand kids and I have to admit I want to see it too. I will be breaking out the popcorn and kool-aid for a family night movie.
Love to take my grandkids to Disney movies == I can trust that it is going to be appropriate.

this looks like a lot of fun - I'm curious to see how it compares to the 1960 beach movies - one thing is that the actors in this new version is more age appropriate.
It sounds like a cute summer movie, and we'll definitely have to tune in for some summer romance.
Funicello moved on from Disney to become a teen idol, starring in a series of "Beach Party" movies with Frankie Avalon for American International Pictures. These included Beach Party (1963), Muscle Beach Party (1964), Bikini Beach (1964), Pajama Party (1964), Beach Blanket Bingo (1965) and How to Stuff a Wild Bikini (1965).
These are the beach movies I grew up with.
